Announcing No Pasaran: A Patreon to Support the Independent Journalism of Shane Burley
I am excited to announce that I am launching a new Patreon called “No Pasaran.” As many people know, independent journalism is becoming harder and harder as freelance rates shrink and the staff positions drying up. At the same time, independent journalism covering social movements and the far-right is sorely needed as we enter a period of global tumult.
In order to spend more time doing the research and reporting I love to do on social movements, labor, fascism and anti-fascism, I am creating a Patreon to fill that gap. I did not want this just to be a fundraising effort, but instead a chance to use the Patreon platform to do something a little new. To do this I am hoping that No Pasaran can become a community that will allow discussion on these critical issues and sharing between activist and journalists. This will include an exclusive Discord server, online sharing through Patreon, and a Reddit that will correspond, hopefully giving the tools where this can become a vibrant space.
The No Pasaran Patreon will be a space that I publish exclusive content for members, including regular articles, interviews, op-eds, long-form essays, book and music reviews, and a lot more research. I am launching the Patreon with two original articles. “There Will Be Indictments” looks at the recent resolution introduced by Ted Cruz to criminalize antifascism, and it looks at how and why this is happening, how similar state repression affected movements like the environmental, NO DAPL, black power, and others. It has original interviews with activists from Rose City Antifa, Antifash Gordon, and Mark Bray and Alexander Reid Ross. It additionally builds on the work of Will Potter, Natasha Lennard, Spencer Sunshine, and many others, and digs in deep on what this type of repression could signal for the left.
The second article I am releasing immediately is called the Antifascist Neofolk Manifesto, and declares ten points for what this new wave of revolutionary neofolk music means.
You can also expect the No Pasaran podcast to begin, which will include original interviews, talks, audio essays, and more. You will get live videos as well as real time reporting from protests and other events, including clips, photos, and a whole lot more.
This will also be the space to support A Blaze Ansuz, the antifascist neofolk blog, and so you can expect more band interviews, playlists, and I will even send new patrons an antifascist neofolk band I think they will like.
I will also be developing some interesting projects just within the Patreon, like the growing Antifascism Glossary that is critical for understanding how to fight the right. I will also be doing regular Q&As/AMAs and will have polls and other interactive content, all built on having you help guide the direction of this community. For patrons who want to give a little more I am offering support in doing research and writing, and hopefully this can become a place for us to develop original work together. I am also offering a quarterly “care package” with books and other fun stuff.
I’m hoping to build something special here and make this the main space where I can continue to put out original content working to understand the political moment we are in. Your support means everything here, and I can’t thank everyone who has supported my work over the last few years enough. If we can build up this channel enough I can spend more and more of my time on this, and even start producing the antifascism documentary I hope to put in the works.
Check out my Patreon and consider becoming a regular patron!
